Newborn Care Q&A
When should I choose a pediatrician for my newborn?
It’s never too early to choose a pediatrician if you have a baby on the way. Expectant parents should feel comfortable with their child’s doctor, so don’t hesitate to meet with the pediatricians at Valley of the Sun Pediatrics before your baby is born.
Selecting a pediatrician before your baby’s birth allows you to get familiar with the practice and complete all needed paperwork ahead of time.
Once your baby is born, regular newborn care appointments with your pediatrician give your baby their best possible start in life. These checkups monitor your baby’s growth and development, and they’re an excellent time to ensure that you’re adjusting to life as a parent in a healthy way.

What happens at my baby’s first exam?
Your pediatrician first sees your newborn at the hospital or very shortly after birth. Your baby’s first medical exam is essential because the doctor does several tests and takes baseline measurements.
At your newborn’s first exam, the pediatrician will:
- Measure their weight and length
- Measure their head circumference
- Do a complete physical exam
- Breastfeeding assistance
- Administer their first round of immunizations
The team assesses your baby’s health, and they’re there to answer any questions you have about breastfeeding and caring for your newborn before you return home.
If you choose circumcision for your baby boy, the Valley of the Sun Pediatrics team offers circumcision procedures. Circumcision is a simple procedure that usually takes less than 20 minutes.
How often does my newborn need a checkup?
Expect to visit the Valley of the Sun Pediatrics office for a checkup about 3-4 days after your baby is born. Your pediatrician will check your baby’s growth and development at this appointment, observe their behaviors, and complete a physical exam.
After your baby's first newborn visit, they should have checkups at the following intervals during their first year:
- Two week
- One month
- Two months
- Four months
- Six months
- Nine months
- Twelve months
Your pediatrician measures your baby’s growth at each visit and administers tests and vaccinations. If you’re ever concerned about your baby’s health or the child has a fever, appears sick, or isn’t eating, visit the doctor as soon as possible.
